Gary Lockel, 54, was arrested on Friday, May 3, the department said in a news release. He was charged with criminal restraint, terroristic threats, simple assault, obstruction of justice, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Atlantic City police responded to the 1400 block of Absecon Boulevard at around 4:37 p.m. Officers received a report of a woman who was assaulted, held against her will, and feared for her life.

A 911 caller said Lockel forced the woman into the crawl space and wouldn't let her leave. Police told Lockel to leave the apartment but he refused.

After police were unable to negotiate with Lockel, officers forced their way into the apartment and arrested him. Lockel had started to barricade himself when police got inside the apartment.

The woman was treated for minor injuries and Lockel was accused of hitting her in the face with an object before threatening to kill her. Investigators said she and Lockel previously dated.

Anyone with information about the case should call the Atlantic City Police Department at 609-347-5766. You can also text an anonymous tip to TIP411 and you should begin the text with "ACPD".

Lockel was held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
